For those of you who either know me personally or who have known me through my online antics throughout the years, you’re probably aware as to how critical I am about certain things with regard to battles. If I hate something, I really hate and conversely, if I enjoy it, I really love it.
Frequently though, you will find me bitching about something or another in a half-assed manner because I’ve given up on explaining certain things in detail. Over the years, after constantly repeating the same stances and opinions into deaf ears, I’ve grown sick of the process. I now instead opt to simply tell people to shut the fuck up because they are idiots.
Two of the most frustrating things that I experience in the battle community are as follows:
1) People who are incredibly wack who somehow receive props from the general populace.
2) People who are incredibly dope who somehow receive hate or apathy from the general populace.
What I’m trying to explain through this rambling preface is that instead of simply telling you all to shut the fuck up, which I’ll likely continue to do, I will instead explain thoroughly why I believe certain people are either underrated or overrated (more frequently I will explain the former). To sum it up, I think its criminal for certain people to never receive the props they actually deserve.
Alright, now let’s get onto the article.
At first glance, to the untrained eye, Paperwerks is just another face in the over-saturated battle circuit known as Grind Time. He sports an unimpressive 3-3 record comprised of battles primarily held in the GTMW division. He’s not super animated with 500 multis about how his opponent sucks cock while simultaneously watching videos of other guys sucking cock. He doesn’t cram a bunch of unnecessary rhymes into his verses as a helping hand in illustrating their wackness.
Instead, he puts together incredibly unique schemes which compliment his equally unique concepts. Every time you hear a verse of his, you will definitely hear something that nobody else in Grind Time has said before. Unfortunately, the majority of battle fans are unintelligent writers and rappers themselves and are only impressed with what they can comprehend. Thus, a line like, “Your mother has sex with goats” or something equally stupid and corny will get a large response when it definitely shouldn’t.
“I am a little off, I’m not normal
At these functions I act cordial
I’ll show up to your door and push your soul through a portal
To another place, now you on another plateau
Don’t make me dig in your natural
Your wig will part ways like defacto!”
Paper said that in his battle with Ness and it got absolutely no response. I think it’s an incredible scheme and should’ve definitely received a large reaction.
“The man’s a deacon
Your punk ass should be banned from speakin’
I’ll run up on your ass like the last Mohican
And scalp your pockets like they did them cats from England”
One thing I would love to convey to battle fans who are morons (most of you) is that you rely too heavily on the “punchline” at the end of the bar. You tolerate horrible setups and incredibly forced lines to build up your treasured punchlines (which as far as I’m concerned is a much gayer word than multi) and are ignorant to the fact that you can’t separate the two. A great punchline isn’t shit without a proper setup, and conversely, really thorough and related setups need to be recognized as well. If you want to see the battle scene continue to evolve and become a much better display of talent, don’t allow forced multis and garbage punchlines.
“Your punk ass should be banned from speaking!” is awesome.
“Sonny, this shit ain’t funny, I don’t feel like I been done right
This the second time in one night I been in a bum fight
The first one tried to steal my son’s bike
This one tried to steal my drum mic
Plus he allergic to the sunlight
He only come out sometimes!”
The way he bounces around from line to line with completely unique and coherent multis is something others should take note of. I of course am not advocating people biting his style, but even if I was, it wouldn’t happen. Paper has natural style which cannot be emulated. When you listen to his verse you can tell he sat down and wrote most of it in order, as opposed to the whole “write 10 rhyming words, fit them together” wash, rinse, repeat method which is popular now.
Paper has a style that you can’t teach. He doesn’t regurgitate played concepts that we’ve all heard 1,000 times (even though he’d certainly win more battles with that style). He puts together really clever and unique rhymes which play off each other effortlessly due to having an actual rapping style. Hopefully people begin to pay attention to it.
Yeah, Paperwerks is underrated, I think due to the fact that his delivery sometimes seems choppy. He’s a monster though, and always comes up with unique subjects I’ve never heard before.
Good shit.
yeah man papes weaves his concepts on some other shit. i think people will finally start seeing how nice he is with this fresco battle
Rap battles are about entertainment, and the fact is 90% people aren’t looking for this type of stuff because it doesn’t entertain them.
And IMO presentation and performance is a lot more important than your schemes and lyrics. Take hollow for example, a lot of what he says is fairly basic but when he says it gets me hyped as fuck and I love to watch it. I know it’s not the most intelligent shit but I just watch battles to be entertained and that’s what most people do…
I can’t remember paperwerks older battles so I might go and rewatch, but the one thing I took from his recent battle with Fresco is that he really needs to work on his delivery. It seemed choppy a lot of the time and he slept up so it ruined what he was actually saying.
Yeah, he’s been getting more recognition since his Grizzlemania battle against Ness Lee. Also something to note is when you take away all the battling stuff, Paperwerks can flip the hell out of a freestyle.
xentech,
Yes. Battles are about entertainment. And like I said, the majority of battle fans are simple minded folks who would rather hear a very easy to understand, cliche line about someone sucking a weiner than something else. I am completely aware of the fact that the casual battle fan does not write rhymes and thus will not understand or be able to fully appreciate how difficult certain things are to write.
For instance they lump all multis together and can’t differentiate between really solid ones and garbage ones.
No complaints on you not digging his delivery. I agree it gets very choppy and causes him to lose momentum. That’s his biggest problem for sure. I can’t explain to someone why a certain style is better than another because that’s not true. Different strokes for different folks.
Not trying to convert anyone really. Just giving some props to a guy who really deserves it.
Loud crowds who cheer for 10 seconds every time someone says “faggot” are the problem. They’re either going to have to get smaller crowds, or mic the emcees like the URL battles. Otherwise there’s no point in having anything more than one line setup, one line punchline. There’s no space or momentum to get a flow going and showcase other skills.
REAL TALK
REAL RAPPERS BATTLING
they will always get less love, you know how many fucking nitwits would rather listen to easy to get mother jokes….
paper is the TRUTH
i bugged out when I saw Paper vs Ness.
First time i saw either and i was blown awway…
