Description:

Any fan of freestyle rap battles should already be aware of the Fresh Coast, the dominant battle force which has racked up more wins in major events than any other region. With multiple Scribble Jam victories and dozens of strong showings all over the nation, this collective of battle technicians has proven themselves to be the top gunners in this highly competitive circuit.

Comprised of battle legends like NoCanDo, TheSaurus, Illmaculate, Okwerdz, Franco, Bo-Rat, Tantrum and more, it’s hard to argue that the Fresh Coast shouldn’t be hailed as the greatest group of battlers in the world.

The Fresh Coast DVD documents the history of these battle veterans, their thoughts on each of their fellow MC’s battle styles, their personal favorite battles, how they wound up with such a dominant scene, the coasts they’ve influenced as well as the biters and clones they’ve spawned.

Production:

Headed by the incredibly talented Kyle Gray, the production side of the film is nothing short of amazing. Each sequence is complete with a super sick transition, giving the DVD a more professional feel to it than you’d expect. Almost all of the footage was shot by the legendary Phillip Drummond, known in battle circles for years as the absolute king when it comes to having the sickest unreleased battles. The majority of the battles shown on the DVD have been sought after for years and it’s truly a miracle that we’re finally viewing the classic footage from Phillip Drummond’s vault.

Check out the sample reel on Kyle’s for a great indication of what to expect from the DVD.

Battle Quality:

Given the focus of this documentary, it should go without saying that the battle quality is top notch. The topics the battlers discuss are frequently interwoven with specific clips that illustrate these concepts perfectly. The film is loaded with rarely seen battles, such as Franco Vs. Oruku Saki (2004 Scribble Jam prelims) and TheSaurus Vs. Tigga Da Rock (Tourette’s), as well as many of the classics we’ve seen over the years (although this time in exceptional DVD quality).

Extras:

In addition to the plethora of random battles which fill the main documentary, the extras section includes well over an hour of additional footage, most of which isn’t available online.

Included battles are Illmaculate Vs. NoCanDo (Battle At The Barb), a new TheSaurus Vs. Mac Mistress (Tourette’s), a new TheSaurus Vs. Infinite (Tourette’s), Illmaculate & TheSaurus Vs. Franco & Shamako + Rochus & Calliz (Mind Games) and many more.

Also included are pretty much all of the Mind Games 2 battles, footage I’ve been waiting to see for a long time. The sound quality isn’t the best on these, but it’s audible and well worth watching. Included battles are Illmaculate Vs. NoCanDo, TheSaurus Vs. Kodyack, Franco Vs. NoCanDo and many more.

Other extras include the incredibly sick 20 minute freestyle cypher between NoCanDo, Okwerdz, TheSaurus, Lush One, D-Lor, Tantrum and Franco, as well as the music videos for Delinquent Monastery’s “A Good Look” and Lush One and TheSaurus’ “The Last Dope Run.” Both songs and videos are dope as shit and very professionally shot.

Overall:

Of the many battle DVDs I have purchased, the Fresh Coast DVD is easily my favorite. Due to it being a documentary with hand picked footage, rather than a single event with a fixed set of battles, it already has one up on its competition. The feature being based on the best battler’s in the world probably helped a little as well.

This DVD is highly recommended and I’d be surprised if anyone who’s purchased it wasn’t completely satisfied with their decision.

Bonus Footage:

Bo-Rat Vs. Infinite (Tourette’s)

Tantrum Vs. Unknown (Tourette’s)

TheSaurus Vs. Jelly Donut (Tourette’s)

  1. this DVD really is amazing and so well put together. Even my family, who arent too familiar with the battle scene as a whole, absolutely loved the way it was put together and how informative it is. I’ve watched it dozens of times and it really never gets old. So much timeless footage, as well as great footage of battles that few have ever seen. Priceless interview footage of franco among other. definately worth the purchase. My only very very minor critique is that maybe the battles couldve been time stamped and dated so people see a clear timeline of how the movement progressed. It’s really a tiny detail though and doesnt really make a difference.
so in summary, buy this and wath it a lot.

  2. gridlocked says:

lots of scribble footage from borat, franco and those guys on the dvd?

It has excellent quality versions of Franco Vs. Dese and Oruku Saki from the prelims as well as some cool stage angles of the main battles. There’s not a whole lot of unreleased Scribble footage on the DVD as most of it is online. There’s a shit ton of great unreleased Tourette’s footage though. And like the review says, most of Mind Games 2 is on the DVD which hosted some excellent battles like Franco Vs. NoCanDo, Illmaculate & TheSaurus Vs. Megabusive & Shamako, etc. It’s an all around amazing DVD. – Syk
