Judging Battles Efficiently

On February - 4 - 2009

This Photoshop took me 7 hours to complete.Recently there’s been much debate over the proper way to judge battles. Many battle fans think the current system is inefficient and leads to frequent jerkings. Certain aspects of the current Grind Time system are definitely flawed and with the scene picking up more steam and recognition with every battle, it’s best the Grind Time officials determine the most efficient battle scoring system and stick to it.

First and foremost, the most crucial element to judging a battle would obviously be to only use non biased and informed judges. Far too often you hear, “He had a lot of punchlines” as the main reason why someone was chosen as the winner. That’s like saying, “Dude said a lot of words… lots of them.” A punchline isn’t automatically good because it’s a punchline. Not to mention that most of the time people’s “punchlines” are simply super played jokes which shouldn’t be given any praise.

What ever happened to, “His presence was ridiculously strong and his lyrics matched his aggression and flow”? Why doesn’t anybody ever say, “It was a heated battle, but for me it came down to Rapper A using a lot of forced multis which ended up giving Rapper B the edge”?

Please choose well informed judges who are knowledgeable in battling to judge the battles.

Florida veteran and present day Cali representative Madness has suggested we adopt the 10-point must system, employed in professional boxing and mixed martial arts. My preferred system is to determine the winner by tallying who won more rounds, with each round being determined by everything, e.g., flow, cadence, lines, aggression, etc.

The 10-point system really only differs from mine with the implement of an 8 point round. In boxing/MMA, an 8 point round is when someone scores a knock down or totally dominates a round. This is applicable in a combat sport because it’s not debatable if someone gets knocked down or is completely dominated, unable to form an offense. In battling it is much, much more difficult due to the fact that rapping is an incredibly subjective art form. Deducting a point from someone drastically effects their overall score and I expect if this rule is implemented, it will lead to much more confusion and controversy than we have now.

However, I do believe it can be used effectively with a few stipulations. I believe a 10-8 round should only exist under the following conditions:

-A rule is broken, e.g., touching someone or speaking during their round.
-Choking. I believe forgetting your lyrics should only be tolerated if you can smoothly transition to a freestyle. More than a few seconds of dead air is choking.

This system would work hand in hand with the already existing Grind Time rules since it appears they don’t understand or really bother to enforce them. While Dizaster put up a good fight against TheSaurus, I am still in awe at how you can completely butcher an entire round, rack up a foul and still win a battle.

What do you think?

The problem to me is not even the system (or the lack of one)

The judges just need to stop STEPPING UP for the job if they WONT STEP UP when its time to vote .

All this bullshit about unneed OT need to stop. (and by the way have you noticed: You got 3 judges for OT, the last one ALWAYS gonna vote for OT too because he knows its gonna OT anyways so he doesnt voice his opinion.)

Why step up and take the job, if when the time comes you cant make the tough descision.

GT owners need to look at the video and analyse the judging work. when you NOTICE a judge didnt voice his opinion just went along with the other judges, or you can see him having trouble making the tough descision and struggling cause he knows it will affect HIS status in the “battle realm” … take not. and if it happens again, DONT invite him to judge again.

You can see some of the judges really have a hard time and feel real bad to be on the spot, they go on and on about how the LOOSER came with “definitly dope shit and nenenenenene” but end up saying “but other dude won”

TALK ABOUT THE WINNER and WHY he WINS.

Stop babbling about how the looser “had some good stuff BUT”

their not babies, they can take it.

Its like judges give more love to the loosers because they dont want to vexe anyone.

The system is not the problem, the PUSSY judges are the problem, no one wants to loose a friend.

So dont go and judge then, stupid.

    Now , im pissed, fuck

  2. I been going to battles, interring battles, hustling battles for prize money for the better part of 15 years by now, and if you truly get in a mouther fuckers ass, nine times out of ten you can overcome shity judges, drunk crowd what ever. In my view that the shits thats missing from most the grind time battles is beats, or at least the ones I have peeped out, I just don’t believe some of these dudes can really hold it down on a beat for real. Even accapella you can tell who got it or not. I know cats be running it beatless like that for copy right and what not, but to me it seams as the norm for the new school battle raper is joke, multi’s, but little style. make mouther fuckers ride beats right, and it all comes out in the wash………..
