MC Battle Blog

An insightful guide to the entertaining world of freestyle rap battles.

Alright guys, if you don’t know about Sandpeople you should definitely check them out. It’s Illmac’s crew out of Portland with around 10 MCs and they’re all super talented. They’re getting some shine with their new video ‘Hate Aside’ on MTVu but are currently in 2nd place by a small margin.

We need your help to push them over the edge into the number one spot. We know how hard it is for our scene’s battlers to get some mainstream shine so whenever we’re close we need to step up and support the movement!

This should definitely be one of the best GTNW events ever. With the last event being shrouded in controversy, fights, and noshows, Illmaculate has certainly worked hard to bring you a much better event the next time around.

9DM, who I believe is one of the best in Grind Time period, is taking on a very serious threat in Ex-I. Ex-I’s last showing against Real Deal wasn’t his best and you can bet your girlfriend’s dignity that he’ll be coming for vengeance in this one (total freeroll if your girl doesn’t have any dignity to begin with. Gamble up!)

The co-main event is another heater between the official Grind Time producer Chase Moore and local Northwest battle veteran Mic Phenom. Mic Phenom is coming off a recent loss to Kid Caustic at Battle Of The Bay 4 and fumbled a bit in one of his rounds. He’s proven capable of breezing through battles with his sharp freestyle skills, but hopefully he won’t need those in this match.

H-Bomb really displayed his range of skills by attacking F.L.O. from a unique angle involving wordplay about his name. Only One is Illmac’s partner in rhyme and an absolute beast on recorded tracks. If you haven’t checked out their album by now, do yourself a serious favor and buy it. Police Brutality was one of my favorite releases in a long time and you’re fucking yourself over by not copping it. This battle will be heat.

The rest of the lineup shows promise as well, but I don’t know enough about the competitors to write anything useful about them. I will say that I laughed at the fact there are 3 Mic ?’s in the lineup lol. Hopefully nobody gets mixed up with each other.

What are your predictions?

Grrrrrrrr!!!!rizzlemania!

Should be a nasty event! Any predictions?

Kevin Beacham, ring leader of Scribble Jam has finally confirmed the persistent rumors that the annual event will be no more. This sucks for many reasons, the biggest for me being that Scribble was the last real legitimate event which hosted a top notch stage battle. Not that Grind Time isn’t a decent substitute, but there’s nothing like witnessing a great live stage battle with beats and mics. The event lasted for 3 days and served as an excellent meeting ground for all walks of hip-hop life.

This fucking sucks.

Pretty sick. It’s obvious Juice still has it.

A lot went into making this list and even after it’s completion I’m sure I definitely left out some real zingers. It was really hard putting these in ranking order as many of them are equally excellent, but in the end, I had my reasons for why I liked one over the other. You might disagree with the order, but whatever, it’s still a solid collection of some the best rebuttals ever so everybody wins.

I’ve included the entire list after the break, so wait until the video ends if you want to be surprised. Major props to Aaaron for putting this video together for me.

Oddly enough, the guy who couldn’t remember what year it was at Scribble Jam has an accurate and relevant message in his songs. This track is a bit older, but you can download their new material here.

Dumfoundead Vs. TantrumMajor props to AZNRAPS.com for conducting this interview with Tantrum & Dum, two super sick Cali MCs.

This is a super old match from Battle At The Barb. I really love it. “This man do, nothing/ Cause it was a fluke that you served NoCanDo, DAMN YOU!” Lots of hilarious lines from both MCs. Oh, and Illmac’s opener was “I’m sure you all know he won Brainstorm/ But what you didn’t know is he spent the 2 & a half G’s on gay porn.” Sorry about it being cut off.

Enjoy! Also, if you dig his battles, check out this post for a chance to win a copy of Illmaculate’s “The Rain Check Mixtape”.
