Repping Columbus, OH, Meta4ce has been a noteworthy competitor in the battle scene for many years. Most known for battle with Bo-Rat in Scribble Jam ‘04, he’s garnered an unruly amount of unjustified hatred from internet turds despite being a sick battler and dope as fuck on tracks. Follow along as we discuss his well known battle with AdeeM, figure out what went wrong against Bo-Rat and get updateded on his music. [This interview is approximately 2 years old.]
How’s it going Meta? What’s been up man, how’s your daughter?
I’m aight. Been drinking some good old fashioned beer. My daughter’s fine, I just got her some dunks.
Word. My girlfriend’s pregnant too. I’m bout to be a father. So, how’d you first get into battling?
My dude’s older brother in Texas (Bigg Naut RIP) was like “super rapper” and he used to make us prove ourselves. So I kept battling him and I got pretty good at it.
Your street battle with AdeeM is something of battle legend. Can you explain exactly how that whole ordeal came about?
I didn’t even really know who dude was before I battled him. I saw his name, but I didn’t watch battles like that. Jakki called me up and told me some white nerd was at Bernie’s and my other dude (who will remain nameless) wanted to take his bread. So I went over there to clown and act a fool, maybe rob, but my other guy Przm was like, “Nah, don’t do that because he’s gonna think I set ‘em up. Just battle him.” So I did.
When he was performing, I’d sneak downstairs and throw ice at that man, being young and immature, trying to see what he was gonna do. It was quite hilarious.

I’m sure you’re all aware of the old saying that battle rappers can’t make good music. Well, it’s not completely unfounded, but there’s definitely a large amount of bumpable music being released by current and former battle all stars. Each week I’ll hit you with some solid cuts from your favorite battlers.
Meta4ce – Bringers Of Death [download]
Meta4ce is probably the most underrated battler ever due to the fact that nobody gave him another chance after he lost to Bo-Rat. Instead of checking his other battles or listening to his music to judge him, they decide his entire skill level on his worst performance ever. Eat crow, this song is murder.

Recently there’s been much debate over the proper way to judge battles. Many battle fans think the current system is inefficient and leads to frequent jerkings. Certain aspects of the current Grind Time system are definitely flawed and with the scene picking up more steam and recognition with every battle, it’s best the Grind Time officials determine the most efficient battle scoring system and stick to it.
First and foremost, the most crucial element to judging a battle would obviously be to only use non biased and informed judges. Far too often you hear, “He had a lot of punchlines” as the main reason why someone was chosen as the winner. That’s like saying, “Dude said a lot of words… lots of them.” A punchline isn’t automatically good because it’s a punchline. Not to mention that most of the time people’s “punchlines” are simply super played jokes which shouldn’t be given any praise.
What ever happened to, “His presence was ridiculously strong and his lyrics matched his aggression and flow”? Why doesn’t anybody ever say, “It was a heated battle, but for me it came down to Rapper A using a lot of forced multis which ended up giving Rapper B the edge”?
Please choose well informed judges who are knowledgeable in battling to judge the battles.
The battles from the Portland New Year’s Eve event were judged by myself, TheSaurus, Okwerdz, Al-One and DJ Nykon. As we were faced with some really thin decisions throughout the event, we definitely anticipated confusion with regard to the judging.

An old throwback battle which was left off the main Brainstorm 2 DVD due to sound quality issues. You can tell this is an older battle (Presence has hair!), but it’s definitely worthy of being posted as Presence absolutely rips it. This was the very first battle I’d ever went to and as far as I know this has never been put online. Enjoy!
