MC Battle Blog

An insightful guide to the entertaining world of freestyle rap battles.

Man, despite several no-shows and a couple of weak performances, I really had a great time at this event. All of the main event battles delivered really hard on both sides and I saw some of these guy’s best performances yet. The atmosphere was really fun and like always, the crowd was really cool down here at GTNW. They usually are really open to laughing at lots of shit, but they don’t overdo it like the KOTD crowd, making for a fairly even mix of cheers.

Alright, first off, the bad news: Chase Moore, who  I was scheduled to battle at the Bridge City Battle 4 event tomorrow in Portland, is almost certainly not showing. He got caught up with some personal issues and had to remain in Sacramento to handle his business and thus could not make the event. It sucks for sure as I was really looking forward to my second attempt at not choking horrendously in a Grind Time battle, but what can you do?

Well, the answer to that question is to prank Reverse Live and leave a ridiculous message on Chase’s voice mail for fun.

Reverse Live Prank:

Explanation: So once I realized that I wasn’t going to get my battle with Chase, I wanted to put together something else, perhaps a 2 on 2 between myself, E.K., Pariah and Evil. Instead of simply asking him that, I somehow decided it’d be funnier to play a joke on him and see how he’d respond. I decided that I’d pretend I forgot all of my lyrics again and try and convince him to help me lie about it and cover it up. Hilarity ensues. I had a difficult time not laughing out loud on a few instances in here, but thankfully didn’t drop the ball.

Chase Moore Voice Mail:

Explanation: So I wasn’t totally satisfied with my successful game with Evil and I decided to fuck with Chase a little bit. I decided I’d talk shit and tell him I heard he’s ducking me cause he heard some of my phenomenal bars and that I wouldn’t battle him at a later date due to bitchassness. And then I recited a ridiculously terrible verse that I wrote in like 8 minutes prior to the phone call.

Bridge City Battle 4

On February - 24 - 2010

Well this should be a fun little event. Unfortunately Engineer Vs. Only One isn’t going down, which really sucks ’cause that definitely would’ve been a barn burner. There’s some nasty matchups on this card and I’m really looking forward to Reverse Live Vs. 9DM. I think it’s one of 9DM’s toughest challenges since Evil can mimic that loud, aggressive, asshole-ish style that 9DM has become accustomed to.

I predict that somewhere in that match, each person will be wished death upon by cancer, AIDS, or perhaps a car wreck which is caused by a pinata filled with hepatitis infected syringes exploding and popping the tires, etc. You know, the usual stuff.

GTNW – Bridge City Battle III

On August - 27 - 2009

This should definitely be one of the best GTNW events ever. With the last event being shrouded in controversy, fights, and noshows, Illmaculate has certainly worked hard to bring you a much better event the next time around.

9DM, who I believe is one of the best in Grind Time period, is taking on a very serious threat in Ex-I. Ex-I’s last showing against Real Deal wasn’t his best and you can bet your girlfriend’s dignity that he’ll be coming for vengeance in this one (total freeroll if your girl doesn’t have any dignity to begin with. Gamble up!)

The co-main event is another heater between the official Grind Time producer Chase Moore and local Northwest battle veteran Mic Phenom. Mic Phenom is coming off a recent loss to Kid Caustic at Battle Of The Bay 4 and fumbled a bit in one of his rounds. He’s proven capable of breezing through battles with his sharp freestyle skills, but hopefully he won’t need those in this match.

H-Bomb really displayed his range of skills by attacking F.L.O. from a unique angle involving wordplay about his name. Only One is Illmac’s partner in rhyme and an absolute beast on recorded tracks. If you haven’t checked out their album by now, do yourself a serious favor and buy it. Police Brutality was one of my favorite releases in a long time and you’re fucking yourself over by not copping it. This battle will be heat.

The rest of the lineup shows promise as well, but I don’t know enough about the competitors to write anything useful about them. I will say that I laughed at the fact there are 3 Mic ?’s in the lineup lol. Hopefully nobody gets mixed up with each other.

What are your predictions?

The battles from the Portland New Year’s Eve event were judged by myself, TheSaurus, Okwerdz, Al-One and DJ Nykon. As we were faced with some really thin decisions throughout the event, we definitely anticipated confusion with regard to the judging.

Who do you think won it in 3 rounds?
