I’m sure you’re all aware of the old saying that battle rappers can’t make good music. Well, it’s not completely unfounded, but there’s definitely a large amount of bumpable music being released by current and former battle all stars. Each week I’ll hit you with some solid cuts from your favorite battlers.
Meta4ce – Bringers Of Death [download]
Meta4ce is probably the most underrated battler ever due to the fact that nobody gave him another chance after he lost to Bo-Rat. Instead of checking his other battles or listening to his music to judge him, they decide his entire skill level on his worst performance ever. Eat crow, this song is murder.

NoCanDo – Paint Me Impatient [download]
To excel in the art of freestyling, you must have an exceptionally quick thought process as well as a wide vocabulary. Seeing as how NoCanDo is one of the best freestylers in the world, it’s no surprise that his written material includes nothing but incredibly well written lyrics. Backed by the ridiculous producer Equilibrium, NoCan creates a very soothing and enjoyable track. I love it.

Produced by Canada’s super producer Marco Polo, this battle themed track serves as a stomping ground for each of these 3 battle veterans. Orange Moon Over Brooklyn is one of my favorite albums ever and I only have a handful of those so do yourself a favor and cop it.
I’ve mastered the reason, perfected the answer

Frankie Riptide – Off Wit His Head [download]
Due to his battle career ending before WRC and Grind Time, Frankie Riptide will be relatively unknown to the majority of you, but rest assured, he’s just as sick on wax as he was in his battles.
When I cross a pen, it’s like gettin’ launched off a cliff
Air lifted then tossed off again

Is the horses in Porsches and Benz’ when Nascar courses begin
I’m raw ’til the end, when crossin’ my mic

The whole song is a quotable really. My best estimate is that it’s around 4-5 years old.
HOM – Lyricist Lounge Promo Verse [download]
It was during 7th grade in 2001 when I first heard the above HOM track, released by Ecko Ultd. as the Underground Airplay mixtape. It wasn’t until 5 years later at Spin The Mic that I heard him again. A super skinny, tall black dude who resembled Snoop Dogg rolled up to the cypher outside, bummed that he’d been too late to battle in the event. He then proceeded to spit several of the illest lines I’ve ever heard, leaving everyone in attendance going nuts. “I’ll hit you with an uppercut to leave you floatin’ like a rubber duck!”
It wasn’t until the very end of the cypher, after listening to him destroy everything for more than an hour, that he dropped his name. It was really shocking to me because I’d played the fuck out of his Lyricist Lounge song for 5 years but had always imagined him as a white guy.
